What is it?
The is essentially a dress diver watch (Click here to see what a dive watch is). It has a unique aesthetically versatile look you can sport with jeans or even a suit, yet rugged enough to deal with sailing the open seas. The case is not ostentatious for no reason, it exhibits simple and luxurious style.
Be sure to look out for those featuring at least 300-meter water resistance. As a pleasant extra, it typically includes a wetsuit extension used so that the watch can be worn outside of a suit.
For a sports watch, it is surprisingly thin. Measuring in at only 12mm thick.
Typical of most Tag Heuer watches, the Aquaracer style fits like a glove. The grip on the bezel is great and has 6 evenly spaced tabs built into the bezel. On the dials 12 o’clock setting sits a bezel that has a completely inlaid pip that cannot be removed or knocked off.
The best part fo the Aquaracer has got to be the dial. It is gorgeous! Sporting a high polish black and printed text. The design really pops when light hits it. Beautiful chrome borders make up the markers that match the hands.
Black text in the date window on a white background. They blend in wonderfully.
Equipped with anti-reflective sapphire crystal are stunning. You may even catch yourself staring and not noticing the fact that it keeps precise time also.
How does it function?
At this price point, keeping time is almost an afterthought. But in classic Tag Heuer fashion, it keeps excellent time compared to other watches I have come across. This usually goes without saying, but whatever Tag Heuer does with their time mechanics is pretty close to flawless.
One of the few gripes I have with the watch is definitely the screw down crown. Don’t get me wrong, it works fine, but gripping it is sometimes a hassle. There is no ridged edge so I found myself trying to turn the entire watch. But it is by no means flimsy, once its unscrewed there is very little play or wobble.
What about the band?
The band has a distinguished look at about 18mm at the clasp then tapering to 20mm as the band goes around. There’s a hidden wetsuit extension. Has a pristine finish with the fold-over style safety clasp. With some linked bands like these, there is a concern that it can pull hairs and provide an uncomfortable experience, that is not the case with this band. It fits great, even on the hairiest arms.
The pin and collar style design makes removing links tricky. If you invest in the watch and need links removed, I would personally go to my local jeweler.
Bottom line, the band looks great! Even though from a closer inspection you can tell that the majority of the money used to produce this watch did not go into the band. But regardless, I do find myself just gawking at it since it catches your eye so well and has a complete look just on its own!
Finally in this Tag Heuer Aquaracer Review… PRICE?!?
This series of watch comes in a variety of colors but blue, black, and a sleek silver seem to be the norm. Retailing at about $1700, you can find it around $1300 at authorized dealers, or about $1000-$1100 on Amazon.
In Swiss watchmaking, Tag Heuer is near the top. It’s features, it’s complications, it’s look, seem to stand the test of time. This is not a fad watch, it will be viable for years, assuming you take care of it. It can take a beating, but why chance it?
In my honest opinion? DEFINITELY.
This watch rides a very fine line in looking stylish yet rugged. I do not have to worry if it gets a little water on it. I do not have to worry if it will go with my jeans and shirt outfit, or my suit. It just works… which is a great reason to buy.
The build quality and precision of typical with Tag Heuer, so no worries there. Go make the investment.
The brand recognition helps and can help you sell it later on if you ever get tired of it and want to get something else.
